Douro Valley Wineries: The Quintas Worth a Visit

The Douro Valley wineries open to visitors fall into four groups: quintas you can walk to from Pinhão station, estates around Peso da Régua, hillside names in the Cima Corgo that need a car, and the big properties further east. This page lists each one with its tasting price from its own site, its booking rule, its opening hours and what makes it different. Tastings start at €10 at Quinta de la Rosa and run to hundreds of euros for full estate days. If you would rather let someone else drive, compare the Douro Valley wine tours from Porto that stop at named quintas. For locations, the Douro Valley wineries map plots every estate on this page.

Quick answer Douro Valley wineries at a glance

Three of the quintas listed here sit close enough to Pinhão station to reach on foot: Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta das Carvalhas and Quinta da Roêda, with self-guided visits from €11 at Roêda and walk-in flights from €17 at Carvalhas. Most other Douro Valley wineries need a car or a tour. Tastings across the valley run from €10 to €75 for standard visits, with full estate days reaching €500 at Quinta do Vesúvio.

Key takeaways

Douro Valley Wineries at a Glance

The table pulls every quinta from the facts on this page, with tasting prices taken from each winery's own site where it publishes them. Figures marked as secondary come from booking listings, and Quinta do Bomfim's price list is not shown here, so check it on the Symington site.

How to Read the Table

"Tasting from" is the cheapest published experience at each quinta, not always a full guided visit. "Booking" tells you whether walk-in works or you must reserve ahead. Where the only price found is on a booking site rather than the winery's own page, the entry says so.

Distances and directions come from the same sources as the rest of the page. For the same estates plotted visually, open the Douro Valley wineries map. If you would rather see two or three quintas in one day without driving, the tours section at the bottom names the Douro Valley wine tours from Porto that stop at specific estates.

Wineries You Can Walk to from Pinhão

Pinhão is the best base for a self-guided Douro Valley wine tour because three working quintas sit within reach of the station, which is 25 km east of Régua. Parking in the village fills quickly in summer, which is one more reason to arrive by train and walk.

Quinta Do Bomfim

Bomfim is the easiest of all Douro Valley wineries to reach on foot, about 0.55 km in a straight line from Pinhão station. It is open daily 10:00 to 19:00 from 1 March to 31 October with the last visit at 17:30, and 09:30 to 18:30 from 1 November to 28 February with the last visit at 17:00. It closes only on 25 December and 1 January, plus 4 July for staff training.

Every visit includes a guided tour of the working winery. Book online or by phone on +351 254 730 370. On site you also find a riverside restaurant called Bomfim 1896, a Merenda na Vinha picnic and vineyard walks with a €2 wine glass add-on.

Check current tasting prices on the Symington site before you go.

Quinta Das Carvalhas

Carvalhas sits about 0.45 km in a straight line from the station, the closest quinta of the three. The tasting room pours wine flights from €17 and is open 10:00 to 19:00 from April to October and 10:00 to 18:00 from November to March, closed 25 December. If you want the famous terraces, a €15 shuttle sightseeing tour runs at 10:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 17:00 from April to October.

Guided vineyard tours cost €48, the premium private tour is €68 and the A Ruin with a View tasting is €88, with children at €5. The view from the top of the estate over the loop of the river is the reason photographers climb here. Walk-in flights make it the simplest first stop on a self-guided Douro Valley wine tour.

Quinta Da Roêda (Croft)

Roêda is the Croft estate, about 1.4 km in a straight line from Pinhão station, a 20 to 25 minute walk along the river road. Tasting visits cost €20 Roêda, €30 Introduction to Croft, €33 Mixology, €40 Croft Tawny, €48 Wine Lover, €51.50 Terroir and €59.50 Connoisseur per person. A self-guided Discovery tour costs €11 alone and €27 with a tasting, one of the cheapest ways into a quinta on this page.

Slots run from 09:30 to 16:30 in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French, and Croft replies to online requests within 24 hours. The estate sits in a quiet bend of the river below the village, with lawns and old port cellars. Book ahead in the busy months, since quinta tasting slots between May and October fill quickly.

Quinta Do Noval Wine Shop, Pinhão

Noval, the famous Vintage Port house, runs a wine shop at 15 Rua da Praia in Pinhão, open 7 days a week from 10:30 to 19:00, so you can taste without leaving the village. Actual estate visits are a different matter. They are by reservation only, open to the public only on weekdays except holidays, so ask the quinta for the price when you reserve.

The estate itself is not a walk-in stop. For most visitors the shop is the practical way to try Noval wines on a train-based trip.

Wineries That Need a Car or a Tour

The best known names in the Cima Corgo hills and along the Régua riverfront sit beyond walking range of any station. A hire car gives you freedom, a guided day removes the drinking-and-driving problem entirely. Distances and prices below come from each estate's own pages unless flagged as secondary listings.

Quinta Do Crasto

Crasto covers about 135 hectares on the right bank between Régua and Pinhão at Gouvinhas, 74 of them vines. The guided tour with a 5-wine tasting costs €41.96 per person for 90 minutes, for 1 to 10 guests aged 18 and over. The superior tasting of 5 wines is €79.71 and a visit with harmonised lunch runs €61.88 per person for 3 hours.

The estate is open daily 10:00 to 18:00, but every visit is by prior booking through enoturismo@quintadocrasto.pt or +351 254 106 086. Plan on a car or a tour to reach it.

Quinta Do Vallado

Vallado sits at Peso da Régua itself, which makes it the standout Régua-side name. The wine tasting is from €35 per adult for 75 minutes with 5 wines and a virtual reality harvest experience, and children up to 12 go free. The port tasting is from €75 per adult for 2 hours with 6 ports plus chocolates and dried fruit.

The estate is open daily 10:00 to 19:00, with English visits at 11:00, 14:30 and 16:30 and Portuguese visits at 12:00, 15:30 and 17:30. Book at enoturismo@quintadovallado.com or on +351 938 611 492, or use its online booking link. Pair the visit with the São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint, about 18 km and 25 minutes away by car.

Quinta Da Pacheca

Pacheca stands at Rua do Relógio do Sol 261 in Cambres on the Lamego side of the river, open daily 10:00 to 19:00. The basic tour and tasting is from €26 for 90 minutes with 2 Douro wines and 2 ports. The version with lunch runs from €91 for 3 hours, one of the few estate lunches among Douro Valley wineries with a published price.

In harvest season a grape treading experience costs from €49 per person, which is cheaper than the €80 to €200 harvest packages typical at the big quintas. You need a car, or you can reach it as part of a guided day that covers the Régua and Lamego side of the river.

Quinta Do Seixo (Sandeman)

Seixo is Sandeman's showpiece at Valença do Douro, and the drive from central Porto takes 1 hour 47 minutes, so it needs a car or a taxi from Pinhão. The €20 visit includes 3 ports and lasts 50 minutes, which is one of the best-value guided experiences in the valley. The €32 vineyard visit runs 2 hours 30 minutes.

From March to October you can add a €70 vineyard picnic among the vines. Book ahead through the Sandeman site.

Quinta Do Panascal (Fonseca)

Panascal is Fonseca's visitor quinta, also at Valença do Douro, open daily from 10:00 to 18:30. Tasting experiences run from €15 for the Classic to €60 for the Signature, with Introdução à Fonseca at €28 and Vintage at €35. The estate's signature format is a self-guided audio tour in 9 languages, including Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Danish and Japanese, so you walk the terraces at your own pace.

Reserve on +351 932 640 072 or email visit.panascal@fonseca.pt. Lunches and dinners are by reservation only. You need a car, or you can reach Fonseca wines on a guided day instead.

Panascal is one of the few Douro Valley wineries where the self-guided format is the main event rather than an add-on.

Quinta Do Pégo

Pégo, also at Valença do Douro, keeps things simple and affordable. A Classic Tasting of 3 wines costs €15 and a Commented Tasting of 4 wines costs €25, both for 2 to 20 people in Portuguese or English. It is also a 4 star rural hotel with 10 rooms, a restaurant and a pool with river views, so it doubles as an overnight base in the heart of the Cima Corgo.

Book ahead, since the tastings are built around fixed groups rather than walk-in service. A car is essential.

Quinta Do Tedo

Tedo sits in Armamar municipality on the river road, so a visit from Pinhão needs a car or taxi. It is open daily 10:00 to 19:00 from April to October and 09:00 to 18:00 from November to March, closed 25 December and 1 January. A Tawny Porto Tasting costs €38 per person daily at 10:30 with Tawny 10, 20 and 30.

The Tour plus Tawny Porto Barrel Tasting is €64, needs 2 people minimum and runs daily at 11:00 in an underground barrel cellar and art gallery. The Tour plus Special Tasting is €36 at 12:00 and at 16:15 in winter or 17:15 in summer. A cheese and charcuterie special tasting runs daily 13:00 to 14:00 at €36 plus a €35 board shared by two.

Bookings only count once the quinta replies, via enotourism@quintadotedo.com or +351 254 789 165.

Quinta Do Portal

Portal stands on the EN 323 at Celeirós in Sabrosa, so it fits a driving loop rather than a station day. Bookings for visits and the restaurant go through +351 968 120 127 or reservas@quintadoportal.pt. The estate also runs a hotel called Casa das Pipas, and tastings are sold on its own booking page.

Its own site does not publish a price table, so ask for the tasting price when you book.

Quinta Nova

Quinta Nova is in Covas do Douro, and its own site names Ferrão station as the rail option, a stop 5 km in a straight line from Pinhão. The 2 Terroirs Wine Tour and Tasting costs €42 per person and the Douro Reserve version €70, each about 1 hour 30 minutes. Guided tours leave at 10:45, 12:15, 15:30 and 17:30 from April to October, dropping the 17:30 slot from November to March.

Tours cover up to 25 people and need advance booking by email to quintanovawineryhouse@amorimfamilyestates.com or on +351 969 860 056. Each visit ends with a tasting at the Patamar wine bar with panoramic views over the Douro. Bigger experiences include Wines and Tapas on the Patamar at €150 for two and a One Day at the Relais & Châteaux at €135 per person.

Quinta De Ventozelo

Ventozelo pairs a working quinta with a 29-room hotel, a restaurant, a wine shop and an interpretive centre, set above the river near the N222. The Sítio dos Prazeres guided visit costs €25 per adult for 90 minutes with 3 wines, and children under 11 go free. Group tastings run from €15 for 3 wines to €35 for 4 reserve wines, and visits are by appointment only through +351 254 732 167 or hotel@quintadeventozelo.pt.

One warning from the hotel's own site: roadworks on the N222 can affect access, so check the road before you set out. The low tasting prices make Ventozelo a good second stop in a day, and the interpretive centre gives context on Douro farming for visitors new to the region.

Quinta Dos Murças

Murças, an Esporão property at Covelinhas near Régua, sells a Douro Tasting at €22 and a Terroir Tasting at €45, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. For something rare, it prices an exclusive VV47 tasting with the winemaker at €220 per person. Visits need advance booking by email to reservas.murcas@esporao.com and are subject to confirmation, so do not arrive hoping for a walk-in slot.

The estate lists its position as 41.153314, -7.688143 and a phone line on +351 254 402 680. Covelinhas is on the Douro line, which makes Murças one of the few hillside estates you could reach by rail and a short transfer, though most visitors come by car from Régua.

Quinta De São Luiz (Kopke)

São Luiz is Kopke's estate at Adorigo in Tabuaço on the left bank of the Douro near Pinhão. It offers a vineyard tour of 1 hour 15 minutes with 5 tastings, so ask for the price when you reserve. Plan on a car or taxi.

If you stay in Porto instead, Kopke's city shop Casa Kopke at Avenida Diogo Leite 312 in Vila Nova de Gaia is open daily 10:00 to 19:00 and pours over 30 wines by the glass, though that is a tasting room rather than a vineyard visit.

Quinta Da Gricha (Churchill's)

Gricha is Churchill's estate at Ervedosa do Douro. The visit on offer is a guided vineyard walk and a look inside the 1852 granite lagar, the stone tank where grapes were once trodden, followed by 3 wines and a Gricha Terroir tasting at €75. The estate does not list walk-in hours, so plan it as a booked stop on a driving day that also takes in São João da Pesqueira, about 20 km and 30 minutes by car from Pinhão according to Vintage House Hotel's guide.

This is a quinta for a second or third visit to the valley rather than a first taste of Douro Valley wine.

Quinta Do Vesúvio

Vesúvio sells the most complete estate day among Douro Valley wineries. The experience costs €500 per person for 2 to 4 guests and €450 for 5 to 10, with children at €50. The day lasts about 6 hours from 10:00 to 16:00 and includes a jeep vineyard tour, 2 Douro DOC wines, 3 Vintage Ports and lunch on the balcony.

It runs only from 1 May to 31 October and needs 7 days notice. Book on +351 223 776 300. The jeep tour is not suitable for reduced mobility or children under 12.

Vesúvio lies in the Douro Superior near Numão, and the official page lists a train arriving at 10:29 as one way in, so it is not a casual drop-in from Pinhão. Treat it as a planned full-day excursion.

Favaios: Adega Cooperativa, Quinta Da Avessada and the Bread and Wine Museum

Favaios sits on a plateau around 600 m above the river, so any visit needs a car or a tour from Pinhão. The plateau is Moscatel country. The Adega Cooperativa de Favaios is open daily 09:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 25 October and to 17:30 in winter, closed 25 December and 1 January.

Tours last 45 minutes to 1.5 hours with six tasting programmes and combo tickets that include the Bread and Wine Museum. Groups above 5 book on +351 259 949 166, and secondary sources list visit plus tasting from €10, a figure the adega's page does not confirm. Quinta da Avessada runs the Enoteca Douro at Rua Direita 26 with commented tastings of Ruby, Tawny and Moscatel and an interactive grape treading museum, though no tasting price is published.

The municipal Bread and Wine Museum at Rua Direita is open daily 09:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30, closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and takes calls on +351 259 950 073.

A Régua Fallback: Solar Do Vinho Do Porto

If the day's quintas are booked out, the Solar do Vinho do Porto in Régua is a reliable tasting stop. Founded in 2004 by the IVDP, the port institute, it occupies a restored 18th century manor. Entry is free and it is listed as open Monday to Saturday 11:00 to 20:00, with paid tastings.

Sources disagree on Sunday hours, and some list only Friday and Saturday afternoon service, so call +351 254 320 960 before you go. There is no vineyard here, but the list covers ports across the styles the IVDP defines, from Ruby and Tawny to aged indications. Pair it with the São Leonardo de Galafura viewpoint, 18 km and 25 minutes away at 566 m, where Miguel Torga wrote of the Douro as an excess of nature.

How to Plan a Winery Day

A self-guided Douro Valley wine tour works best around the train to Pinhão and two or three booked tastings. The rules below come from the estates' own booking pages.

Book Ahead, Always

Quinta tasting slots between May and October fill quickly, so booking is advised for every estate on this page. Some are strict about it. Crasto accepts visits only by prior booking.

Quinta Nova and Murças require advance email booking, and Murças adds that visits are subject to confirmation. Tedo only counts a booking once the quinta replies to your email. Vesúvio wants 7 days notice and runs only from 1 May to 31 October.

Roêda replies to online requests within 24 hours, so send your request a few days out. The exceptions are the Pinhão walk-ins: Carvalhas's tasting room with flights from €17 and Noval's wine shop, open 10:30 to 19:00 seven days a week.

Closing Days to Plan Around

The Douro Valley wineries here mostly stay open daily in season, with a short list of closures. Carvalhas closes only on 25 December. Bomfim closes 25 December and 1 January, and is shut on 4 July for staff training.

Tedo closes 25 December and 1 January. The Adega de Favaios closes on both of those days too, and the Favaios museum adds Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Noval estate visits are open only on weekdays except holidays, which is the tightest rule on this page.

In practice, any day from spring to autumn works, and Sundays are fine at the Pinhão quintas. Check each estate's own page before a winter trip, since November to March hours shorten at Bomfim, Carvalhas, Tedo and Quinta Nova.

How Many Tastings Fit in a Day

A same-day Porto to Douro train trip realistically gives 5 to 6 hours in the valley after about 4 to 5 hours of travel. In that window, two booked tastings plus a viewpoint is a full day. Tastings run 50 minutes at Seixo, 75 minutes at Vallado, 90 minutes at Crasto, Pacheca, Murças and Quinta Nova, so two visits with travel between them take about half a day.

Add the flights-only stop at Carvalhas on foot and you still have time for the river. If you want three estates, lunch and a cruise in one go without driving, look at a Douro Valley wine tour from Porto instead, where the operator handles the schedule.

Drinking, Driving and the Train Option

Port, the wine most quintas pour, is a fortified wine at usually 19 to 22 percent alcohol according to the IVDP, so a three-port tasting carries real weight before an afternoon drive. The honest options are a designated driver who skips the port flights, taxis between estates, or the train. The Porto to Douro Valley by train route puts you at Pinhão station within walking distance of Bomfim, Carvalhas and Roêda, and a €15 one hour rabelo trip to Romaneira and back adds the river without a car.

If you do drive, spread tastings across the day and favour DOC wine flights over port flights before getting back behind the wheel.

The Harvest Season

The Douro harvest is expected to run from September to early October, with peak picking in the third and fourth weeks of September, and September is the top pick for harvest atmosphere but the busiest and most expensive month. Harvest packages at big quintas typically cost €80 to €200 per person and accommodation should be booked 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Pacheca's grape treading experience starts from €49 per person in harvest season, a cheaper entry into the tradition.

Expect crowds in Pinhão, where parking already fills quickly in summer. For the wider calendar, including the almond blossom from the second week of February to early March, see the best time to visit the Douro Valley guide.

Which Tours Visit Which Wineries

Most Douro Valley wine tours from Porto visit two estates but few listings name them. The tours below are the ones whose listings do name their quintas. Prices are the listings' own prices in dollars.

Tours That Name Their Quintas

The Douro Valley Premium Small-Group Tour from Porto from Portugal Excellence Tours costs $194.96 and includes a cheese-paired Port tasting at Quinta da Roêda, the walkable Croft estate in Pinhão, plus a farm lunch, a 1-hour boat ride and a second winery with olive oil tasting. The Douro Valley Boutique Wineries tour from DailyTours costs $146 and takes in Quinta do Fôjo and Quinta do Laranjo, with a wine-paired farm-style lunch and a 1-hour cruise. The half-day tour from Living Tours costs $67.66 and visits Quinta São Luiz or a similar quinta with 3 wine tastings, a 50-minute cruise and a viewpoint stop.

The Douro Valley Prime Tour from Viva Douro Tours costs $137.62 and includes Fonseca among its two family wineries, with 9 premium wines and a private 50-minute boat cruise.

TourNamed quintaPriceGroup

Half-Day Tour, Living ToursQuinta São Luiz (or similar)$67.66Up to 27

Tours That Do Not Name Their Wineries

Most listings keep their estates anonymous. The Complete Douro Valley Wine Tour at $113.53, the Small Group Tour at $113.53, the EFun small-group day at $103.21, the Planeta Pautado day at $224 and the Cooltour Oporto day at $169.73 all visit two wineries with tastings, lunch and a cruise but name none of them. The sommelier tour at $156 from Grapes journeys visits two family-owned wineries with a lunch in Pinhão and a 1-hour cruise, again unnamed.

The private options work differently. The customizable private tour at $236.62 and the private driver day at $393 leave the tasting tickets to you, paid separately, which means you can point the driver at any quinta on this page, from Carvalhas to Crasto.

Choosing Between Named and Unnamed

A named quinta lets you check the estate's own site and tasting list before you pay, which matters if a specific producer is the reason for your trip. If Quinta da Roêda is on your list, the premium tour is the only full-day option that names it. If a half-day is enough, the $67.66 half-day with Quinta São Luiz or similar is the lowest priced way to taste inside a working quinta with transport from Porto handled.

If you would rather build the day yourself, the free day trips from Porto hub and the Pinhão Douro Valley guide cover the train-and-walk version of a Douro Valley wine tour from Porto, and the Douro Valley wineries map plots the estates.

Douro Valley Wineries: Questions and Answers

What are the best wineries to visit in the Douro Valley?

For a first visit, the walkable Pinhão trio of Quinta do Bomfim, Quinta das Carvalhas and Quinta da Roêda covers three famous producers without a car, with tastings from €11. With a car, Quinta do Seixo, Quinta do Crasto and Quinta do Tedo add hillside terraces and tastings from €20 at Seixo to about €42 at Crasto. The full list with prices is in the Douro Valley wineries at a glance table.

What is the best time of year to visit the Douro Valley wineries?

April to October gives the longest opening hours, and September brings the harvest, expected to run from September to early October with peak picking in the third and fourth weeks. September is also the busiest and most expensive month, so book accommodation 6 to 8 weeks ahead. See the best time to visit the Douro Valley guide for the full seasonal calendar.

Can you walk to wineries from Pinhão station?

Yes. Quinta das Carvalhas is about 0.45 km from the station, Quinta do Bomfim about 0.55 km, and Quinta da Roêda is a 20 to 25 minute walk along the river road. Quinta de la Rosa needs a taxi because it sits on the opposite bank. Pinhão itself is covered in the Pinhão Douro Valley guide.

Are Douro Valley wineries open on Sunday?

Most are. Carvalhas is open daily except 25 December, Bomfim closes only 25 December and 1 January, and Tedo, Crasto, Panascal and Vallado all list daily opening. The exception is Quinta do Noval, whose estate visits are open only on weekdays except holidays, though its Pinhão wine shop opens 7 days a week.

How much does wine tasting in the Douro Valley cost?

Standard tastings run from €10 for a 30 minute tour at Quinta de la Rosa and €11 for Croft's self-guided Discovery tour, through €15 flights at Panascal and €17 at Carvalhas, to €75 port tastings at Vallado and €75 at Churchill's Quinta da Gricha. Full estate days go far higher, from €140 at la Rosa to €500 at Vesúvio. Compare that with a full Douro Valley wine tour from Porto from $67.66 that includes transport and tastings.

What is the best Douro wine to taste at the quintas?

Try both sides. Port comes in Ruby styles such as Ruby, Reserve, LBV and Vintage, and Tawny styles with 10, 20, 30 and 40 year indications plus Colheita, at usually 19 to 22 percent alcohol, all defined by the IVDP. Douro DOC table wines, poured in the DOC flights, show the same grapes unfortified. A flight like Tedo's €38 Tawny tasting covers three ages side by side.

Rather than driving between quintas, let a sommelier take a group of 8 to two family wineries, with lunch in Pinhão and a 1-hour cruise.
